The Kitchen Garden Programme aims to develop skills and values that contribute to sustainable living practices such as composting, recycling, and growing and cooking with local produce. The programme also aims to develop personal and social skills by giving students the opportunity to work effectively in groups and learn about personal hygiene and safety.
In kitchen lessons, students learn how to hold and carry a knife safely, how to spread with a knife and the importance of eating a range of healthy foods from the 5 food groups. They have the opportunity to taste a number of dishes that they have helped to prepare and also practice washing and drying dishes.
In garden lessons, students learn how to collect and plant seeds, how to use food scraps to feed composting worms and explore ways of dealing with garden pests without using poison.
